An Open Letter to the Dysregulated Parent

An Open Letter to the Dysregulated Parent

To the parent who feels like they’re one step away from losing it…

I see you.

Not the version of you that keeps it together in public…
Not the version that knows all the “right” things to do…
But the one who feels overwhelmed, touched out, exhausted… and still expected to show up calmly for someone else.

Parenting doesn’t pause just because your nervous system is overloaded.

And no one really prepares you for that part.

They tell you how to help your child regulate…
But they don’t talk enough about what happens when you can’t.

When the crying feels too loud…
When the backtalk hits something deeper…
When your body reacts before your brain has time to catch up.

That’s not you failing.

That’s your nervous system doing exactly what it learned to do.

Because dysregulation isn’t just a child’s experience…
It’s a human one.

And sometimes, your child’s big emotions don’t just ask something of you…
They activate something in you.

Old patterns. Old stress. Old ways of coping.

That doesn’t make you a bad parent.
It makes you an aware one… if you’re willing to notice it.

So here’s the shift…

You don’t have to be perfectly calm to be a safe parent.
You don’t have to get it right the first time.

What matters is what happens after.

Repair matters.
Coming back matters.
Letting your child see you take a breath, pause, or even say
“I didn’t handle that how I wanted to… let me try again”
matters more than never struggling at all.

Because that’s what actually teaches regulation.

Not perfection… but modeling.

So if today felt hard…
If you raised your voice…
If you shut down…
If you walked away because staying felt like too much…

You’re not alone in that.

And you’re not stuck there either.

Start with one breath.
One pause.
One moment of coming back.

That’s where regulation begins… for both of you.
