An Open Letter to the Teen Who Is Hurting in Ways You Don’t Always Show

To the one who says “I’m fine”… even when you’re not…

I see you.

Not just the version of you that people expect to see…
But the one who feels overwhelmed, shut down, or like everything is just… too much.

The one who doesn’t always have the words for what’s going on inside.

If you’ve been hurting yourself…
Or thinking about not being here anymore…

I want you to hear this clearly:

You are not “too much.”
You are not broken.
And you are not alone in feeling this way.

A lot of what you’re feeling makes sense… even if it doesn’t feel that way.

When emotions build up and don’t have somewhere to go…
Your brain and body look for any way to cope.

Sometimes that looks like:

  • trying to release the intensity
  • trying to feel something instead of nothing
  • trying to make the inside match what you feel

It doesn’t mean you want to die.

A lot of the time… it means you want the pain to stop.

And I know people might tell you to “just talk about it”…

But that’s not always easy.

Sometimes:

  • you don’t have the words
  • you don’t want to be a burden
  • you’re not sure how someone will react
  • or it just feels safer to keep it in

That makes sense too.

But you don’t have to figure this out on your own.

Even if it feels uncomfortable… or awkward… or messy…

Letting someone in—even a little—can change things.

It doesn’t have to be everything all at once.

It can start with:
“I don’t really know how to explain this…”
or
“I’ve been having a hard time lately…”

That’s enough to begin.

And if your parent reacts strongly sometimes…

That doesn’t mean they don’t care.

It usually means they’re scared.

Not of you… but of losing you.

You deserve support that feels safe.

You deserve people who will sit with you in the hard moments… not try to rush you out of them.

And even if your brain tells you otherwise…

There are ways through this that don’t involve hurting yourself.

If today feels heavy…

Start small.

One message.
One conversation.
One moment of choosing to stay.

You don’t have to do this perfectly.

You just have to keep going… one step at a time.
